Heavy D – you liked him, your mama liked him and your grandma too! Good music, positive energy, clean lyrics and a good man. I didn’t know you personally Heavy, but I followed your career and supported you. I have never heard a negative remark about you, but what I did hear was that you were positive and a giver. How blessed you were and are. Thank you for sharing your gifts. God called you home and I am OK with that because you did what God called you to do with your short time here on earth. Thank you Heavy aka. Bumditleyditleydee!

Man words can’t even explain how the Overweight Lover going to be miss growing up to his music Here come your Mr. Bigstuff with the high top tennis with the sweat suit he made a big guy look sexy. I still can’t believe he is gone his body is not with us but his spirit and musical talents will always remain with us until our end. I wish the younger generation could understand the true meaning of hip hop when these guys battle on the mic and not with weapons and one thing about Hev he was a mellow fellow no drama no beef he was just that smooth Teddy Bear with the ladies. May Dwight R.I.P. with his homeboy Troube T. Love you Dwight Myers aka Heavy D bka Overweight Lover. Gone but never ever be forgotten.

I loved Heavy D as an artist and as a person, getting to know some of his personality through his tweets. I feel like we grew up together. His music has been such a major part of my life since I feel in love with hiphop back in the day. Without him, a piece of history is gone…

One of the first Hip Hop artist I listened too, when I came to America. One of the main reasons why I love Hip Hop so much. I felt like I knew him though I never met him. He lost a brother in the same month years ago, it’s crazy. He looked so good(pause) at the awards. R.I.P Heavy

I remember first seeing the video with Andre Harrell and the Uptown artists on the Video Jukebox Network when I was a kid. That was my first glimpse of Heavy D and the Boyz. I loved them from the start, but never could’ve imagined Heavy’s transition from a rap artist and dancer to an actor. A true triple threat, and then I was blown away by his latest release of songs influenced by his Jamaican background. I never had the honor of meeting him, but I’m grateful for the legacy that he has left his family, friends and fans. Much luv!

Heavy D, quite literally, is the reason I love hip hop. My mother was a strict, religious woman. She would not allow me to get anything with a Parental Discretion sticker on it. Heavy D’s “Blue Funk” was the first hip hop cassette I ever purchased. It was tough! Without cursing! As I got older, I was able to make more of my own decisions regarding the music I purchased, which included Illmatic, Ready To Die, Cuban Linx, Reasonable Doubt, and many more over the years. Personal salute to Heavy D for opening that door for me. Thank You.

I will forever smile/laugh when I hear his name. quick funny story: In ’94, I just knew my boyfriend was cheating. I found just the cover for the cassette single of ‘U Got Me Waiting’ in his things…and I blew up! (scuse the language, but I said) “WHO THA FK YOU GOT WAITIN???”…..he was like, “Mann, I just like Heavy D and that song”…”Then WHERE is the damn tape??”….”uhhhhhhhhhh”. Needless to say, she didn’t have to wait any longer for his sorry butt,
SO SAD YOU’RE GONE, HEAVY D. You brought much joy. RIP.

For me, losing Heavy D is like losing one of my all-time favorite cousins. In fact, I felt the same devastating blow as the one I’ve felt when JMJ passed on. With that said, one of my favorite memories of Waterbed Hev was watching “Now That We Found Love” on Video Juke Box in 1991. I just wish I had the chance to meet the brother at least once, just to tell him that his music has got me through elementary, middle, and high school. Rest In Power, Hev. And, to Grap Luva, Pete Rock, CL Smooth, Eddie F, and G-Wiz, keep your heads up.

Heavy D brought smooth to Hip-Hop. I’ve always been a West Coast rap fan but I would pick up a Heavy D when it dropped. His delivery was flawless, his lyrics were on point and he never tried to be what he wasn’t. That’s what I’ll always remember about him and his music. There was a time when most in Hip-Hop were trying to jump on the bandwagon of whatever trend was big at the time but Heavy didn’t change for anyone and originality is what Hip-Hop was always meant to be. He’s going to be missed for a long time….

Heavy D was JUST that: Heavy Dwight in words and wisdom, in peace and love, in mind and soul, in life and in death. He opened doors, brought smiles, layed tracks, fought the odds, and proved to the naysayers it wasn’t over until its over. I do not know him personally. I grew up with his lyrics, interviews, posters, tv show apperances and concerts. Reading his tweets was not only an honor but beyond enlightening for the day (if not week). I truly believe God needed this angel back. May all those personally affected by his absence find peace with it; the type of peace Heavy would have betowed onto all! I just wanted to repost this,so hopefully it’ll help other people as they mourn. I’d been following “Heav” since I got on Twitter, and really hoped to meet him one day,so that instead of just sending him a post to thank him, I could actually shake his hand, maybe even hang out & drink some pineapple juice with him. It literally hurts to know he’s passed, but he asked everyone to “Be inspired”, so I hold that thought along with my memories.
Thank you.

I type this waiting to depart to the east coast for Heavy D’s services. Being a native of Mt.Vernon I remember when Heavy D and the Boys dropped their first album. Hev had a brown Chevy Blazer with Heavy D in the tint. He is our prince. He put Mt.Vernon on the map. Uptown was truely kickin it back then. After the BET awards where Hev ripped it, I was excited to see what was next for him. Sadly his final peaceful journey came too soon. Thank you Hev for showing the people of Mt.Vernon and the world that you can set an example with positivity and class. Bless your family and fans around the world to have experienced your life and Music. I believe one of your last tweets was “Be Inspired” I forever will be, Thank You Brother. R.I.P

When I think about Heavy D I think about hip hop walking down the aisle with funk and soul. Unlike other rappers of his era Heavy D’s music appealed to a audiences both young and old. He made rap cool and classy all at the same time. He was more than a rapper; he was an entertainer. He rapped, sang, and danced his way into the hearts of many by pairing his witty lyrics with popular hits like More Bounce, Now That We’ve Found Love, and Mr. Big Stuff. I’m glad we were able to see him perform one last time before he made his Peaceful Journey. Rest in peace Heavy D.

Heavy D was an inspiration unlike any other. I did not know him personally but I can tell that he was a genuine person because of the way he affects so many people. I use the word ‘affects’ because even though he is gone, he is still having a huge affect on so many people. It hurts when you lose a genuine person who tries to live what they say and who has such a zeal and joy for life but God knows best. I pray for his family, friends, and fans that God will comfort and strengthen you during this time. For He is the healer of ALL things and it is His will.

I always knew that I would one day meet Heavy D and let him know how much his music meant to me. Well, really one song in particular. While I have been a fan of the man since I first heard The Overweight Lover’s Is In The House, I have been particularly fond of his Reggae infused songs. The tunes with Super Cat in the early 90’s are some of my favorites of Heavy’s long and storied catalog. That is why when I heard in early 2009 that Heavy D had a Reggae album, Vibes, I immediately copped it.
The song that did it for me on that album is Queen Majesty. It is a beautifully worded ode to a woman that Heavy finds way out of his league. On top one of this lush, classic Reggae break, which by the way is called the Queen Majesty riddim, Heavy waxes poetic on his love and admiration for this woman, this queen majesty. The song is actually a remake of an earlier version by the crown prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown.
At the time, my wife and mother of my 3 young daughters was in the throes of chemotherapy after being diagnosed in September of 2008 with triple negative breast cancer. She had just completed the first round of chemo and she was, in my eyes, wasting away. On top of being bald, she was emaciated, skinnier than I had ever seen her and wasn’t eating or sleeping much for that matter. In December of 2008, while she was undergoing her treatment, my wife’s dad, who she had a contentious and complicated relationship with, passed. Even though they weren’t close it was an extra burden that just added to the overall impact of what we were facing.
Then in January 16th of 2009, the other shoe dropped. On that fateful Friday, one of her many doctors informed us that they had found a blood clot in her heart. Due to the location and size of the clot, she wouldn’t be able to take pills to reduce the size of the clot but would have to have twice daily injections to her abdomen. The doctor insinuated that she was in grave danger of losing her life.
That weekend was probably, for me, the toughest time of this whole ordeal. After everything we went through, I felt it wasn’t long before it was all over. That Monday, which was MLK day, I was alone in our bedroom sweeping and listening to Heavy D’s Vibes album when Queen Majesty came on. That song hit me like a ton of bricks; I was on the verge of losing my queen majesty and the dam broke. I cried like I had never done before. I realized that I was not strong enough to handle this alone. I pride myself in being able to support and care for my family but I was helpless with the problem before me.
At that very moment, when I was at my lowest, listening to this magnificent record, I felt for the first time, the feeling of grace. It was like that song put me in communion with something bigger than me. I instantly felt better and knew that we would get through this. My Queen Majesty, Eileen Z. Fuentes, is thankfully around 3 years later, healthy, happy and cancer free. To this day, I still cannot hear that song without crying.
I knew that one day I would share this story with Heavy D and would touch him like his song touched me. That unfortunately never happened. Heavy D thanks for the music, the memories and for Queen Majesty. You helped me through the toughest time in my life. You will live forever through your work. Heavy D lives! The Overweight Lover will always be in the house.

I feel that outside of being this LEGEND int he Hip-Hop Industry, that he was also a very humble and inspiring person. He was so down to earth. I hate that I didn’t ever get to see him again in person. I have to admit, he was the one who started my “Big Man” fetish. I loved his SWAG. He was always a Gentleman. Incomplete is what it is! *SIGH* The thing that I’ll ALWAYS LOVE the most about him is that on EVERY album/CD that he made…and I do mean EVERY ONE…he ALWAYS did at least one single/cut that paid tribute and respected Black women…From “Sister Sister (Peaceful Journey), Girl (Blue Funk), to everyones favorite Black Coffee (Nuttin’ But Love). There is NO male artist that’s doing that now or has done it all (please correct me, if I’m wrong). I obviously never knew Heavy D but I felt his spirit. No one knows my struggle, they only see the trouble
Not knowing it’s hard to carry on when no one loves you

No man alive has ever witnessed struggles I survived
Praying hard for better days, Promised to hold on
Me and my dogs don’t have a choice but to roll on
We finally found a spot to kick it
Where we could drink liquor and no one bickers over trick shit
A spot where we could smoke in peace
And even though we Gs,
We still visualize places that we could roll a piece
And in my minds eye, I see this place the players go and pass it
Got a spot for us all, So we can ball
At Thug’z Mansion”

“Dear mama don’t cry, Your baby boy’s doin’ good
Tell the homies I’m in heaven and it ain’t got hoods
Seen a show with Marvin Gaye last night
It had me shook
Drinking peppermint schnapps with Jackie Wilson and Sam Cook
Then some lady named Billie Holiday sang
Sittin there kickin it with Malcolm till the day game
Lil’ Latasha sure grown, tell the lady in the liquor store that she’s forgiven
So come home
Maybe in time you’ll understand, only God can save us
Where Miles Davis cutting lose with the band
Just think of all the people that you knew in the past that passed on
They in heaven found peace at last
Picture a place that they exist, together
There has to be a place better than this, in Heaven
So right before I sleep dear God what I’m asking
Remember this face, save me a place
In Thugz Mansion”
